Training was given to the LRRPs by the 1st Royal Australian Regiment, who were familiar with jungle operations and were veterans of combat operations in Malaysia. These handpicked men, who reported officially to the unit on 2 January 1967, would be the cornerstones of the 196th Light Infantry Brigades Provisional Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) (pronounced Lurp) Detachment and trainers for the units future patrollers. This proper ground work enabled Company M to achieve superior results during its relentless tracking of two formidable regiments. Everyone performed duties including the team leader, assistant team leader, Kit Carson, medic, radio telephone operator (RTO), and pointman. Additional training of the volunteers was On the Job Training (OJT) and at the RECONDO school at Nha Trang. Volunteers to the unit arrived with different styles of uniforms depending on what was being worn by the unit they recently departed. For over a year the LRRPs of the 71st watched scores of footbridges, embankment pathways, and other guerrilla traveled avenues across the paddy landscape. As time progressed, K/75th Rangers took up what became for them routine 4 and 6 man long range reconnaissance patrols and ambush missions. The Detachment participated in Operations Attleboro, Wheeler, Wallowa and Junction City penetrating and patrolling into War Zone C of I Corps. In retrospect one can easily see that L Company (Ranger) has continued to provide timely and accurate intelligence data to the 101st Airborne Division by aggressive and professional Ranger operations and personnel.
